PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP ADVENTURES

ULTIMATE New Zealand / Winter   August 21 - Sept 1, 2024

“This workshop is James and Susie Kay at their best. Their decades of experience photographing New Zealand and their knowledge of the country is quite evident and provides the best New Zealand photography experience possible. Great food, outstanding accommodations, well planned and perfectly executed. Most impressive were the customized helicopter flights which were carefully planned around the best light and routes designed by Jim. If you’re a photographer, it doesn’t get any better!” John Morrison, San Diego, CA  See all testimonials

Escape the hazy skies of a Northern Hemisphere summer and join us on this 11-day, deluxe, all-inclusive adventure, where we’ll explore and photograph the most spectacular locations in New Zealand’s premier National Parks in the Southern Lakes Region during the winter season. We’ll divide our time between the stupendous glaciated summits of Mount Cook National Park, the awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage site of Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park, the glistening peaks and turquoise rivers of Mount Aspiring National Park, and the enormous glacial lakes surrounding Queenstown and Wanaka. New Zealand’s winter season is surprisingly mild with its snow-capped mountains and snow-free valleys and is truly a magical time of year for photography.

The highlight of this adventure will likely be our 4 private, customized, 1.5-hour helicopter flights over the most breathtaking mountains in the Southern Alps. Based on his countless helicopter flights throughout these mountains over the last 30 years, Jim has designed the ultimate, custom flight paths for the best light angles and aerial-photography opportunities. Each of our heli-excursions will include a glacier landing high in the mountains where our pilots will shut down the engines so we can jump out and photograph the amazing scene around us in sublime silence.

We should call this trip our Ultimate-New-Zealand-Astrophotography-and-Helicopters Adventure since August is also the best month for night-sky photography with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy directly overhead. We’ll photograph sparkling, snow-capped peaks and turquoise lakes during the day and then venture out after dinner to capture brilliant star-filled skies in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve in Mount Cook National Park as well as in Milford Sound and Wanaka. We have chosen the dates for this workshop based on the phases of the moon to ensure the best night-sky photography conditions possible.

As usual, we’ve reserved the most desirable rooms in some of New Zealand’s highest-rated accommodations in the heart of each National Park with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps right out our windows. We’ll also enjoy exceptional meals at some of New Zealand’s finest restaurants. We’ll travel with an intimate group of 8 guests and we’ll maximize our time in the field capturing images in a wide diversity of awe-inspiring locations. Our New Zealand workshops are our flagship adventures with no detail overlooked to ensure that you’ll return home with a treasure-trove of images and memories to match. No other New Zealand photography experience comes anywhere close!  READ MORE

WORKSHOP ITINERARY

This is a field workshop where we’ll spend full days in the field. We’ll meet at our Queenstown accommodation on the edge of Lake Wakatipu which we’ll use as a base to photograph and explore the southern portion of Mount Aspiring National Park with its enormous glacial lakes and mountains. After that, we’ll travel to Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park to photograph New Zealand’s single most iconic location. After Milford, we’ll travel to our lakeside lodge in the lovely town of Wanaka to photograph glistening snow-covered peaks in the northern portion of Mount Aspiring National Park and then, finally, off to Mount Cook National Park with its stupendous mountain scenery. Details below:

Queenstown Region (Southern Portion of Mount Aspiring National Park & Southern Lakes Region.)
With the jagged crest of the Remarkables Range as a backdrop, Queenstown serves as a gateway to both the southern portion of Mount Aspiring National Park and the eastern section of Fiordland N.P. Located along the shoreline of 60-mile long Lake Wakatipu on a narrow strip of land at the base of the mountains, you’ll understand why the Queenstown region has become one of New Zealand’s most photographed destinations. During our 3-night stay here, we’ll spend 2 full days exploring and photographing ice-clad peaks, turquoise rivers, and enormous glacier-carved valleys in the southern reaches of Mount Aspiring National Park. One of the highlights of our time here will be our private, customized helicopter flight to a landing zone high in the mountains where we’ll have more than one hour on the snow to photograph a vast array of glaciated peaks rising out of the turquoise waters of Lake Wakatipu, 3,000 feet below us. In the evenings, we’ll return to our very comfortable one-bedroom suites on the water’s edge and wonderful meals prepared by some of New Zealand’s finest chefs. Accessing our photo locations here will involve easy short walks.

Fiordland National Park
We’ll spend 3 days photographing Fiordland’s countless waterfalls, soaring peaks, tremendous glacier-carved valleys, and luxurious rain forests filled with Jurassic-era vegetation. The road from Te Anau (the gateway village for Fiordland) to Milford Sound on the west coast, is world-renowned as one of the most dramatic auto routes on Earth. With massive, glacier-sculpted peaks rising on both sides of the road, we’ll take one full day to explore and photograph the entire length of this route. Along the way, we’ll venture well off the beaten path to explore and photograph waterfalls, turquoise rivers, and rainforest-covered mountains in deep, glacier-carved valleys. When we arrive in Milford at the end of this first day, we’ll check in for 2 nights at the Milford Lodge with our comfortable chalets before heading out to capture last light at New Zealand’s most iconic single location. World-renowned for its views of Mitre Peak towering more than one vertical mile above the deep waters of the fiord, Milford is truly one of the most stunning locations on Earth. Our fleet of 3 helicopters will be waiting for us for another 1.5-hour long, customized helicopter flight above the most spectacular glaciated peaks in Fiordland National Park and 2,000-foot tall Sutherland Falls, New Zealand’s highest. Part of our excursion will involve a glacier landing surrounded by the most stupendous glaciated summits in Fiordland where we’ll jump out of our helicopters for 30 minutes to photograph the amazing scenery around us. Two nights here will allow us multiple opportunities, in this often-stormy region, to capture dramatic images of swirling clouds, waterfalls, and sheer-walled mountains rising thousands of feet from the water’s edge. We’ll also take an intimate, two-hour boat excursion along the entire length of the fiord, out to the Tasman Sea, to photograph soaring cliffs, plunging waterfalls, birds, seals, and dolphins. Accessing our photo locations here will involve short, easy walk. After dark, we’ll venture out to capture the brilliant Milky Way Galaxy as it fills the sky above us.

Wanaka Region (Northern Portion of Mount Aspiring National Park & Southern Lakes Region.)
Serving as the gateway to the central and northern portion of Mount Aspiring National Park and located along the shores of its magnificent, 25-mile long, namesake lake; the small village of Wanaka still possesses the same wonderful, sublime charm we discovered during our first visit over 30 years ago. During our time here, we’ll take another breathtaking 1.5-hour, customized helicopter flight, this time into the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park in our fleet of 3 helicopters (so everyone gets a window seat), including a fly by of its 10,000-foot namesake peak, Mount Aspiring, also known as New Zealand’s Matterhorn. Based on his countless helicopter flights above these mountains over the last 30 years, Jim has designed a unique customized flight path to maximize our photography potential. Part of this flight will involve a snow landing high on a remote mountain top with one of the most spectacular views in the park. Our pilots will shut down the engines of our 3 helicopters so we may enjoy the serenity of this location as we photograph the sea of ice-covered peaks around us. Once back on the ground, we’ll photograph glaciated peaks in the heart of the park during the day and star-filled skies at night. At the end of each day, we’ll return to our one-bedroom suites in our lodge; the only accommodation in Wanaka located directly on the shore of the lake. Accessing our photo locations here will involve several easy hikes.

Mount Cook National Park
Surrounded by stupendous mountains and glistening glaciers, we’ll have 3 days to explore and photograph some of the most magnificent mountain scenery in the world with 3 nights in our Premium rooms at the Hermitage Hotel in the heart of the park with jaw-dropping views of Aoraki/Mount Cook right out our windows. Whether you prefer the more recent name of “Mount Cook” or the original Maori name of “Aoraki” this 12,218-ft glacier-wrapped peak will take your breath away as it towers more than 10,000′ above us. Once you see these mountains, you’ll understand why Sir Edmund Hillary used this area as a training ground for his accent of Mount Everest. During our 3 days in the field, we’ll take one easy/moderate hike of 3 miles round trip, plus a variety of other short walks to our photo locations. One of the highlights of our time here will be another customized, 1.5-hour helicopter flight with our fleet of 3 helicopters through the heart of the most stupendous mountains in the Southern Alps. From his countless helicopter flights throughout New Zealand over the last 30 years, Jim has designed the ultimate, customized flight path to maximize our photography potential as we fly past tumbling glaciers, towering ice cliffs, soaring ice-clad peaks, and New Zealand’s longest glacier. Halfway through the flight, we’ll land on the surface of a glacier, shut down the engines, and jump out of our helicopters to photograph the ice-covered mountains surrounding us. We’ll capture first and last light as it illuminates the highest summits in the core of the park as well as brilliant star-filled skies at night. Mount Cook NP is located in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, the largest such reserve on earth and the only one in the southern hemisphere. With virtually zero light pollution and crystal clean air at this time of year, the views of the Milky Way Galaxy will simply take your breath away.

WORKSHOP TESTIMONIALS

“This workshop is James & Susie Kay at their best. Great food, outstanding accommodations, well planned and perfectly executed. Their decades of experience photographing New Zealand and their knowledge of the country is quite evident and provides the best New Zealand photography experience possible. Most impressive were the customized helicopter flights which were carefully planned around the best light and routes designed by Jim. But I was just as happy traveling the backroads of New Zealand with an accomplished professional photographer chasing beautiful light and unique compositions. If you’re a photographer, does it get any better?” John Morrison, San Diego, CA

“Thank you for a memorable adventure!! It was beyond my wildest expectations! It was a wonderful trip; certainly one of the very best I have ever had. You and Susie do such a wonderful job in making every aspect of a photo workshop a winner! I know it takes months of planning to make such a complicated itinerary a success. Your personal attention to details is so much appreciated. I cannot think of one item to improve the workhop. It is not surprising that all your workshops fill up so quickly. You two are great!!!” Dr. Carl Kjeldsberg – Salt Lake City, U

“Thank you for the best trip and workshop of my life! An epic voyage through a fascinating and picturesque world with the best guides on the planet! Many thanks for a marvelous trip!” Paul Kaufmann – San Diego, CA

“Thanks for an incredible time in New Zealand!! I really do not have any word but unfathomable!!! Thank you for creating an amazing experience for the tribe!!!” Lynda Holman – Marietta, GA

“Well, that was another fabulous New Zealand trip! Thank you for being both terrific group leaders and even better people. We’ve done a lot of workshops over the past few years and you are hands down our favorites. Thoughtfull, giving, organized and fun; we so enjoy spending time with you. We loved seeing NZ in its snowy state, and came home with an abundance of photographic riches and happy memories.” Paul Pigott, Seattle, WA

“It was my pleasure to join both of you and the awesome group again in New Zealand. It was a phenomenal experience. The helicopter photography was amazing and couldn’t have been better. The whole trip was top notch and unforgettable but that is not unusual for a James Kay workshop with you and Susie.” Carrie Lapow, Waterford, WI

“I loved the trip and, as usual, you and Susie’s company and leadership. What an amazing place; the helicopter flight at Mount Cook was epic; and, my goodness, the food and the wine!! This trip was a lifetime experience for me!!! It was also a special time with all our friends along. I am blessed to have you in that category! Great images and memories.” Doug Haines, San Francisco, CA

“Many thanks guys. What you accomplished was nothing short of magnificent. Your hard work and dedication to excellence and detail was obvious. I cannot imagine that any other photo excursion could come close to what you gave me…my heartfelt thanks!” Dr. Murray Robertson – Edmontal, AB

“Thanks for two glorious weeks in New Zealand. The photo locations, the lodging, and the adventure was unmatched. You guys offer so much more than a typical workshop; you make us all feel like family, much appreciated and well looked after. Secondly, your expertise and familiarity with New Zealand is unmatched for US-based tour providers. Thanks to all your trips to New Zealand over the years, you certainly know “The Land of the Long White Cloud”. You made the workshop feel like a family vacation. Taking great photos in spectacular locations is certainly a plus, but being able to tour, enjoy great food and lodging, learn new things and do it with like-minded and adventurous people makes this workshop one not to be missed. Thank you both!” David Benson – Denver, CO

“Thank you for an amazing adventure! You are wonderful guides and your commitment to creating a great experience for us was evident throughout the trip. We will be looking at your other workshops, and plan on signing up for at least a couple more next year. I’m afraid you haven’t seen the last of the Pigotts!” Paul Pigott – Seattle, WA

“Thinking back to all our adventure trips in the last 17 years, I recognized one central element in which your trip differed fundamentally from every other trip: Every single element of this trip to New Zealand was determined and overseen by the two of you, no one else. In every other trip experience, the trip leader was an important element of the trip, but only ONE element; (many) other people were responsible for the many parts of the trip. You two OWNED this trip!! What a positive difference that made to us.” Michael & Linda Roberts – Darnestown, MD

“I looked at my photos and was amazed at how well they turned out. So in addition to having a fun trip filled with new adventures and friendships, I have a renewed passion for photography. Thank you again for making it all possible!” Claire Benson – Denver, CO

“We had a fantastic time! It was such a fun group of people, and, of course, the scenery was amazing. Enjoy the rest of your time in New Zealand. We hope to see you again soon!” Molly Forstall – San Francisco, CA

“I just wanted to thank you again for an awesome New Zealand workshop. As always, it was with the now-expected excellence that the two of you bring to your craft. The group was wonderful, the learning exceptional, the lodging and meals over the top. This trip was not about removing an item from a photographer’s bucket list, it wiped out the entire bucket list in one trip! You are without a doubt, the best of the best photography workshop planners, instructors, and hosts. Again, thank you for a mind-altering three weeks of friendship and photography and a lifetime of images, memories, and just flat-out fun!” Fred Kraut – Salt Lake City, UT
