Little Cottonwood Creek drains the core of the Wasatch Range east of the Salt Lake valley and serves as one of the main water supplies for the Salt Lake Valley. The creek begins less than 7 miles from this location as snowmelt high in the glacier-sculpted valleys above the town of Alta. The 11,000- foot peaks which surround Little Cottonwood Canyon squeeze prodigious amounts of moisture from the clouds during the winter season. The resulting snowfall buries these mountains beneath a deep mantle of snow which slowly melts throughout the summer to sustain this creek. This photograph was captured on 6×7 format film.
