Photograph of Big Cottonwood Creek along Big Cottonwood Canyon. An early-November snowfall weighs heavily on the branches of river birch trees along the banks of Big Cottonwood Creek in the Wasatch Mountains of northern Utah. This creek begins 10 miles upstream of this location as snowmelt high in the glacier-sculpted valleys above the small town of Brighton. The 11,000-foot peaks which form the southern ridgeline of Big Cottonwood Canyon squeeze nearly 500″ of snow from the clouds during an average winter season. An exposure of several seconds blurred the water as it flowed around the boulders in the creek.
