The region of Utah located between the Green River and the San Rafael Reef receives scant amounts of rainfall each year. Small dune fields such as this are scattered throughout the area as prevailing southerly winds create small furrows in the sand. Towers of Entrada Sandstone rise above the dune fields. This same sandstone layer forms the arches in Arches National Park just east of this location. These sandstone formations had their origins as large sand dunes which covered this region approximately 170 million years ago and now complete the cycle by eroding back into shifting dunes.
