Cathedral in the Desert, Escalante Canyons, Glen Canyon NRA, Utah

In April 2005, due to a prolonged drought, the sandy floor of Cathedral in the Desert emerged from the waters of Lake Powell in Glen Canyon for the first time in over 35 years. Located several miles up the Escalante Arm of Lake Powell, Cathedral in the Desert was was flooded by the waters of the reservoir after the bypass tunnels around Glen Canyon Dam were screwed shut in 1963. Known only to a handful of explorers who ventured into the depths of Glen Canyon before the dam, Cathedral in the Desert was considered by many to be the most magnificent location within all of Glen Canyon. At the time this photo was taken, the water level of the reservoir was 145 feet below full-pool with the reservoir capacity at 32%.
