Sunset Arch, Forty Mile Ridge, Escalante Canyons, Utah

Sunset Arch frames snow-capped 10,388-foot Navajo Mountain along Hole-In-The-Rock road below Fifty-Mile Mountain south of the town of Escalante, Utah. Located on a ridge between the deep canyons of the Escalante River, Sunset Arch was formed as blocks of Entrada sandstone fell away from a lone sandstone fin. The most recent blocks litter the ground beneath the 15-foot tall arch. The summit of Navajo Mountain lies just two miles north of the Arizona border on the Navajo Nation and is considered one of the sacred mountains of the Navajo people.
