Partially enveloped in clouds, 8,881-foot tall Red Eagle Mountain (upper right) rises above Two Dog Flats along Saint Mary Lake during early October when the cottonwoods and grasses along the lake have taken on their autumn hues. The pointed summit of 8792′ Split Mountain rises in the center of the image. 15,000 years ago, the center of Glacier National Park was a vast icecap spilling glaciers far out onto the Great Plains and gouging out the enormous basin which is now filled by the waters of Saint Mary Lake.
