A late-September snow frosts the summit of Hungabee Mountain above a grove of yellow subalpine Larch trees in Opabin Valley above Lake O’Hara in Yoho National Park. Unique to the conifers, the needles of these trees turn yellow and are shed in late September before winter snows fill these valleys. Subalpine larches grow at the upper reaches of treeline which is located at about 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) here in the Canadian Rockies. The sharp ridgeline of Hungabee Mountain forms the continental divide. The water draining down this side flows into the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean while the waters on the other side eventually reach Hudson Bay.
