Hidden from view just 14 miles southwest of the town of Jasper in Alberta, Canada, an imposing mountain wall known as The Ramparts rises 3,000 feet out of the waters of Amethyst Lake in the Tonquin Valley to create one of the most remarkable settings in all of the Canadian Rockies. In this black & white photograph, a small, ephemeral hole in the clouds to the east allowed the rising sun to illuminate the knife-edged ridgeline with a jagged band of light for less than five minutes. Amethyst Lake may be reached on foot or horseback by traveling 10 miles up the Astoria River valley on the Mount Edith Cavell Trail. This black & white horizontal photograph was captured with a 6×7 format camera.
