In this black & white photograph, Havasu Falls plummets 100 feet over a travertine ledge into a deep turquoise-colored pool at its base. Travertine ledges surrounding the falls are continually being created as calcium and magnesium carbonates precipitate out of these mineral-laden waters. These minerals are carried in solution until the carbon dioxide evaporates out of the water causing the carbonates to drop out of solution. This results in an elaborate and every-changing series of travertine pools at the base of each waterfall along this creek and tints the water a lovely turquoise green. The Havasupai people live in the village of Supai just upstream from this waterfall. All goods to this village are brought in by trail or helicopter since no roads penetrate this deep canyon.
