What appears to have been a tortured past for this sandstone formation today provides a dazzling display of light and texture. This multi-hued, taffy-striped sandstone canyon is unique even here, where intricate patterns and textures wait to be discovered around every bend. Located at the eastern edge of Grand Canyons Kaibab uplift, a unique confluence of geological events has produced a dizzying display of hoodoos, swirled sandstone, coral-colored sand dunes and windswept stone basins. These stripes of yellow, orange, pink and red were caused by the precipitation of manganese, iron and other oxides which were contained in the water which percolated through these rocks when they were sand dunes approximately 190 million years ago.
