Ominous October skies frame the 12,605 high bulk of Mount Moran in the Teton Range of Grand Teton National Park. While not the highest peak in this spectacular range, Moran is certainly the most massive at it anchors the northern end of the range above Jackson Lake. This dramatic set of mountains is the result of a huge block of the earth’s crust being shoved skyward as an adjacent block sinks into the earth as a result of the stretching of the earths crust in this region. While the summits of these peaks loom 7,000 feet above the valley floor, total displacement along this still-active fault has already reached an incredible 33,000 feet. The first snows of the season usually frost these mountains in late September as seen in this photograph as the parks resident waterfowl populations begin their migrations southward.
