Late-September snow dusts the 13,809 summit ridge of Dallas Peak above the town of Telluride in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. At four-thousand square miles, the San Juan Mountains are arguably the premier mountain range of Colorado. With thirteen summits over 14,000 feet, these mountains are mecca for climbers or anyone else simply wishing to take in the spectacular scenery. Volcanic in origin, the San Juans began to rise at the beginning of the Laramide Orogeny about 60 million years ago. The scenery we see today is mostly a result of the recent ice-age glacial advances which culminated about 20,000 years. These vast glaciers carved deep valleys and sculpted the precipitous peaks which surround the town of Telluride today.
