The Escalante Canyons region of southern Utah contains some of the best remaining evidence of what the fabled canyons of Glen Canyon were like before Glen was flooded to create Lake Powell in the early 1960s. Countless well-watered canyons of Navajo, Wingate and Kayenta Sandstones have been sculpted over the eons into some of the most beautiful places on earth. As seen here in this black & white photograph, a small stream cuts soft grooves into a layer of Kayenta Sandstone along Coyote Gulch on its way to join the main Escalante River several miles downstream from this location.
