Few locations on the Colorado Plateau can rival the sandstone formations of Coyote Buttes in the Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area of northern Arizona just south of the Utah border. A unique confluence of geological events has produced a dizzying display of hoodoos, swirled sandstone, coral-colored sand dunes and windswept stone basins. Due to the dry climate and frequent cloudbursts during the late-summer monsoon season, any soil or sand which accumulates here is quickly swept away to reveal the bare bones of the earths crust. As recently as twenty years ago, the Paria Plateau was home to roaming herds of thirsty cows looking for something to eat and drink in this windswept wasteland of sand dunes and bizarre rock formations. What was surely an earthly hell for them has become one of the most popular hiking destinations anywhere on the Colorado Plateau.
