The five elaborate faces in this black & white panorama photograph peer out from a small alcove across a large flat area along a canyon bottom which may have been used for farming. These beautiful “faces” motifs are only found in one small area in southern Utah. It has been suggested that these unique designs may have their basis in the combination of Fremont art and ancestral Puebloan art. While the Fremont are known for their strong anthropomorphic figures, the ancestral Puebloan were not. These Pueblo II & III anthropomorphs are distinguished by their elaborate jewelry, headdresses and the pre-smoothing of the rock before the faces were painted on. This panoramic black & white photograph was captured with a 6×17 panorama format camera.
