Nestled in a glacier-carved valley at the base of Angel Wing and Mount Gould, Grinnell Lake glows iridescent turquoise due to the silty glacial meltwaters which pour into it from Grinnell Glacier. Tucked up high under the rim of the continental divide and just out of view to the right in this photograph, this once-prominent glacier continues to shrink in size and scientists estimate that at the current melt rate, it will disappear within the next 15 years. At the center of the image, clouds sweep the summit of 9,553-foot Mount Gould, one of Glacier’s most majestic peaks. These basins and valleys in the Many Glacier area of the park still provide safe habitat for a small number of Grizzly bears.
